Our Commitment

Mercread Youth Centre is committed to minimising our environmental impact and promoting sustainability across all our activities. We recognise that protecting the environment is essential for the wellbeing of current and future generations, and we aim to embed environmental responsibility into everything we do.

Our Environmental Objectives

Energy Efficiency
We have installed solar panels and heat pumps to reduce our carbon footprint and energy consumption. We regularly monitor our energy use and seek opportunities to improve efficiency throughout our building.

Waste Reduction and Recycling
We actively promote waste reduction, reuse, and recycling. Our centre provides clearly labelled recycling bins with illustrated guides to help young people and community members sort waste correctly. We compost our food waste to reduce landfill contributions and create nutrient-rich soil. We encourage all users of our facilities to minimise waste and recycle appropriately.

Circular Economy and Repair Culture
Through our Repair Café and Preloved School Uniform Exchange, we promote the repair, reuse, and repurposing of items rather than disposal. These initiatives reduce textile and product waste whilst supporting families financially and building community skills.

Environmental Education
We integrate environmental themes into our youth programmes through themed activities, workshops, and discussions on topics such as recycling, composting, and sustainable living. We aim to inspire young people to adopt environmentally responsible habits and become advocates for positive change.

Sustainable Procurement
Where possible, we source supplies and services from environmentally responsible providers. We consider the environmental impact of our purchasing decisions and prioritise products with minimal packaging, sustainable materials, and ethical production methods.

Community Awareness
We work with partner organisations to deliver environmental education events and activities that raise awareness about local and global environmental issues. We support initiatives that bring the community together around shared environmental goals.

Implementation and Review

Our trustees and staff are responsible for implementing this policy and ensuring that environmental considerations are integrated into our planning and operations. We review this policy annually and adapt our practices in response to emerging environmental challenges and opportunities.

All staff, volunteers, and users of our centre are encouraged to support our environmental commitments and to suggest improvements to our practices.

Our Ongoing Actions

We continuously work to:

  • Reduce our energy and water consumption
  • Minimise waste sent to landfill through composting and recycling
  • Promote sustainable transport options
  • Maintain and improve our building’s environmental performance
  • Engage young people and the wider community in environmental initiatives
  • Monitor and report on our environmental impact

By working together, we can create a more sustainable future for Seaford and beyond.
